SUMMARY:Enterprise Data Management Demo Day
DESCRIPTION:Enterprise Data Management Demo Day is a live online event that showcases data-driven products\, tools\, and services from several vendors. Join DATAVERSITY and popular Data Management product vendors for as many as five live demonstrations and get answers to your toughest questions throughout the day. This online event might be your best opportunity to research\, review\, and make the best buying decisions for your organization. \nSemantic Web Company COO\, Helmut Nagy\, will demonstrate a recommender engine from 8:00 am to 8:45 am PT. Make sure you are there!  \nRegister here!  \nA Knowledge Graph Driven Recommender Engine\nAbstract:\nAccording to various studies\, employees in knowledge-intensive industries spend >20% of their time searching for the right information. The right information might be the relevant document you are looking for\, the right person to talk to\, the right piece of equipment to use\, etc. So relevance is key and ideally\, you would want to describe what you are looking for and get back what best meets your expectations. \nIt is quite clear that no traditional search system can meet these expectations. But a recommender system built on a knowledge graph can do the trick. When you connect your business objects to the knowledge graph\, each of those objects is given a semantic footprint. This footprint can be generated automatically\, regardless of the type of object. It can be used in many cases to describe a document\, a person\, a device in more detail. It can be used to recommend similar objects or objects of a different type instead. \nIn this talk\, Helmut Nagy will show how such a system is built and works in a real-world example. \nSpeaker Bio:\nSince 2013\, Helmut has been COO of the Semantic Web Company and is responsible for the design and implementation of all customer-oriented processes\, together with the involved teams and team leads based on SWC’s business strategy. He is working as the senior consultant on several customer projects (industry and public administration) and participates in European research projects. Helmut is co-author of “The Knowledge Graph Cookbook“. \nClick the button below for more information about the conference and how to register.  \n \n Register here!

SUMMARY:Information Architecture Conference 2021
DESCRIPTION:For more than 20 years the IA conference has been the preeminent event for practitioners and academics who confront the systemic challenge of creating and managing digital user interfaces and rich information environments. A dedicated team of volunteers from the IA community along with Kunverj produce the conference each year. \nConnecting Users to Content: An Introduction to Taxonomy Design & Creation\nby Heather Hedden\, PoolParty TeamApril 21\, 20212:00 PM to 4:00 PM EDT\nThis workshop meets 3 times \n\nApril 21\, 2021 2 PM to 4 PM EDT\nApril 22\, 2021 2 PM to 4 PM EDT\nApril 23\, 2021 2 PM to 4 PM EDT\n\nTaxonomies have evolved from classification systems to adaptable interactive tools to link users to desired content on websites\, intranets\, and web applications. Taxonomies are not the same as a website’s navigation and can do a lot more. Taxonomies can provide guiding categories of topics\, suggested search terms\, aspects for faceted search\, or topics for sorting and filtering results. To be truly helpful\, however\, taxonomies need to be well designed to suit the users and use cases\, be customized to the content\, and conform to taxonomy best practices and standards so that they are easy and intuitive to use. \nThis workshop teaches taxonomy creation principles and addresses the issues of designing a taxonomy to serve users. It presents best practices in designing taxonomies\, including the principles of wording of terms\, incorporating synonyms\, creating relationships between terms\, and designing hierarchies and facets. Other topics include taxonomy project planning\, sources for terms\, and taxonomy testing. The workshop will also include practical exercises and access to taxonomy management software. \nClick the button below for more information about the conference and how to register.  \n \n Visit Event page

SUMMARY:The European Data Conference on Reference Data and Semantics
DESCRIPTION:On March 17th\, 2021\, Semantic Web Company (SWC) COO Helmut Nagy and SWC taxonomy\, ontology\, and knowledge graph expert Heather Hedden will host a two-part workshop titled “Building\, enhancing\, and integrating taxonomies” as part of the ENDORSE conference. \nHere is a summary of the workshop submitted by its presenters: \nKnowledge organization systems\, and specifically controlled vocabularies (including taxonomies\, thesauri\, term lists\, ontologies)\, play a key role in making content and data easier to find\, whether within an organization or published externally. Knowledge organization systems are utilized in many ways in information management and retrieval: topic browsing\, search support\, discovery\, filtering results\, sorting results\, curated content and alerts\, content management workflows\, data analysis\, recommendations\, etc. Many organizations already have various controlled vocabularies designed for different purposes but lack an enterprise-wide taxonomy\, have taxonomies that are out of date\, or have taxonomies that are under-utilized. \nThis workshop focuses on several basic methods to get started in either building a new taxonomy or in combining and enhancing existing controlled vocabularies. \nThe workshop’s first section is an introduction to knowledge organization systems with a focus on the suitability of different types for different purposes: term lists\, name authorities\, classification systems\, hierarchical and faceted taxonomies\, thesauri\, and ontologies. Standards (especially ISO 25964 and SKOS) will briefly be mentioned. Participants will be quizzed on which kind of knowledge organization system is suitable for different kinds of situations and for different kinds of concepts (subjects\, names\, etc.). \nThe next section\, which is the focus of the workshop\, addresses different methods for coming up with concepts in a knowledge organization system\, whether as a new KOS or to further build out and enhance an existing one. Because knowledge organization systems connect users to content\, they need to be designed to take into consideration the users’ needs and inputs and take into consideration the specific corpus of content. So\, we will consider both users and content as sources for taxonomy concepts and their labels. Methods of obtaining inputs for concepts from users include brainstorming workshops\, stakeholder and sample user interviews\, search log analysis\, and card sorting exercises. A brainstorming session is more suitable for participants from the same organization\, so our workshop’s main interactive activity will be a collaborative card sorting exercise through an online tool. Methods of deriving concepts from content include a manual content audit\, identifying concepts as a trained indexer would do\, and automated term extraction. We will have one interactive exercise of manual content analysis for concept identification and then present a demo of a tool for term extraction from a large corpus of documents. \nThe final section of the workshop will briefly consider the issue of combining existing knowledge organization systems in overlapping subject areas. They can either be merged into one\, if there is no business need to keep them distinct\, or they can be kept separate and linked at the individual concept level. If there is considerable overlap\, they may be “mapped”\, which means the concepts are designated as equivalent or nearly equivalent\, and one controlled vocabulary may be used for the other\, such as one at the tagged back end and one at the retrieval front end. Sometimes controlled vocabularies\, which do not have equivalent concepts but rather related concepts\, are linked with other related-type relationships. Participants will learn when each method of merging\, mapping\, and linking are suitable and the methods involved. \nThis workshop is suitable for both those who are building new knowledge organization systems and those who need to integrate or enhance existing knowledge organization systems. \nClick the button below for more information about the conference\, the program\, and to get registered.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Helmut Nagy\n COO at Semantic Web Company \n \n XLinkedIn\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Heather Hedden\n Taxonomy Expert \n \n XLinkedIn\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Visit Event page

SUMMARY:Data-Centric Architecture Forum 2021
DESCRIPTION:We are sponsors of the Data-Centric Architecture Forum 2021. \nMeet us on Wednesday\, February 3\, 2021\, 12:45 – 12:55 pm EST; 10:45 – 10:55 pm MST (virtual/online) for the vendor spotlight where our Director of Marketing will present PoolParty Semantic Suite.  \nDon’t miss the “Ontology Design by Enriching Taxonomies” working session on Wednesday\, February 3\, 2021\, 2:15 – 3:45 pm EST; 12:15 – 1:45 pm MST (virtual/online) with two of our top knowledge engineers: Heather Hedden and Alexis Dimitriades.  \nSession Description: Data and the subsequent knowledge derived from information are valuable assets of an organization. What makes it especially valuable is if the data can be classified and linked in a knowledge graph to achieve better decisions\, customer satisfaction\, and knowledge discovery\, by solving such problems as localized meaning\, data silos\, heterogeneous data sources\, and divergent kinds of structured and unstructured data. Ontologies model and semantically link different kinds of data forming the basic structure of a knowledge graph. \nThere are different approaches to designing and creating ontologies\, however\, and the choice of which may depend on what taxonomies and other knowledge organization systems already exist in an organization\, whether the focus is on only data or also other content\, and what tools are available. This workshop addresses the approach of building an ontology as a semantic layer on top of existing taxonomies or other controlled vocabularies\, thus semantically enriching and linking them\, and then the ontology itself does not need to be large and complex. Practical issues or decision points in creating ontologies will also be covered\, and there will be some participatory activities.  \n \n Visit Event page
